In 2016 we had our first corporation with
‘Discovery Air’, the previous name of Top Aces. We were lucky
enough to see the A-4 Skyhawk air to air and at that time we all thought
“that will be the last time we got to see the Skyhawk fly in Europe…”
However, in 2018 we felt so lucky we got another chance to see two A-4
Skyhawks flying behind the Skyvan photoship again, enjoying every moment
as that would be for sure our last chance…
In 2022 we had another glorious aerial encounter with the Top Aces Skyhawk
on its flight to RIAT. The all-time classic jet is super popular with
photographers, so another thousand pictures were taken!
With our increased corporation with Top Aces
in the USA, we were all over the moon when we got the approval in June
for another round of the iconic A-4 Skyhawk. As it can always be thé
final chance, the Skyvan photoship was full of eager photographers to
catch the A-4 again. This time it would also be joined by the Alpha Jet,
finally back in Europe for Red Air missions!
But the day started with another fantastic opportunity, courtesy of
the German Navy. A very final chance, this time definitely for real, to
meet one of the last flying Sea Kings. Much to the delight of everyone,
it was one of their special paint helicopters and even the weather played
ball giving us all an awesome time. Once the Skyvan was back on the ground,
the Sea King did came back to give the photographers a private airshow…
Fielen dank guys, next time we see her it will be in a museum!
The German Navy also had a second aircraft for
us, as we got to fly a photomission with their P-3 Orion. The days of the
Orions are also numbered as many pilots are already in training to fly the
successor, the P-8 Poseidon, in the near future. So our next ambition is
to have a unique 2-ship in the air!
As we called this project the ‘Top Aces
day’, that was still the main flight of the day of course!! With
ideal weather and a stunning background what could go wrong? Well, nothing!!
Tack sharp on time we got absolutely amazing time with the A-4 Skyhawk
for a long join-up and a full set of dynamic manoeuvres. After a while
it was joined by the pitch black Alpha Jet, certainly a challenge for
the photographers seeing this jet next to a bright shiny A-4. After the
traditional 2-ship photos, the Alpha Jet gave us another 10 minutes for
all the possible solo poses. Those Top Aces pilots really know how to
fly, I think they give the pilots in the German Air Force a really hard
time playing the enemy!
This time I no longer want to say that this was our final opportunity
with the Skyhawk. I’m sure there will be another chance in the future
to meet both the Alpha Jet and Skyhawk in the European skies.
