The Danish Air Force was well-known for its bi-annual airshow, a free event for the public, with a line-up of static and dynamic performers that made it one of the biggest shows in Europe, AND the largest outdoor event in Denmark. Unfortunately 2024 would be the year where we learned that the airshow would no longer take place...

As we had an awesome project in Denmark in 2016, 2018 and post covid in 2022, of course we were ready with the Skyvan photoship to fly for the airshow again. Despite the initial disappointment, it was so wonderful to learn that we have big and supportive friends at the Fighter Wing at Skydstrup airbase, home of the 727 Sqn flying the F-16 and brand new F-35.

We replanned our project around the F-16 and F-35, flying for two days from Sønderborg airport. A big shout out goes to the current Danish F-16 display pilot ‘TEO’, who guaranteed us nothing but promised the Skydstrup team would not disappoint us. Well… they kept their word BIG TIME!!!

Despite the rather challenging weather – that turned out to be a blessing for the photos – the stars of the Danish Air Force came out to fly with the Skyvan on both days. We had the premiere of the new demojet ‘half century’, with flares of course! We had the chance to see both the single and 2-ship F-16s, the new F-35 and the unique 2-ship formation of both types.
Now the ‘surprises’ in the line-up were just as good!! Jens and Heidi from ‘Den Flyvende Hangar’ brought us not once but twice the L-29 Delfin jet, and after a most enjoyable landing in Odense – their home airport – they also took to the skies with their super colorful Antonov-2… amazing!
On the military side the Danish pilots spoiled with us a join-up of the SeaHawk, unique formation with the F-16, 2-ship of the T-17 trainer and the unannounced appearance of the giant Search & Rescue Merlin helicopter. All fantastic moments for the photographers onboard the Skyvan.

However, the biggest surprise of all was the join up of an F-16B still in its original Norwegian colours, what a treat. We had two awesome days flying in Denmark, and despite the days of the big airshow are history, next year we will do it all again.

2025 will be the last full year of operational Danish F-16s, so it will also be the last chance to see their Vipers in the sky. Plus the F-35 that looks better with each join up, especially with the nice touch of colored roundels. And already wondering what the bag of surprises will bring!
